Overview
Our Sunday School with 1350 students is the largest in the
Indian Orthodox Church. We have classes from Pre-KG to 11th
grade. Under the leadership of our Vicar, Asst. Vicar, the
Head Master and with the support of Managing Committee
members and an elected Parents Committee, classes are
conducted every Thursday evening from 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm in
the National Evangelical Church and Arabic Language Church
premises in Kuwait City by a team of 130 dedicated
teachers. Classes are also held at St. George Chapel,
Abbasiya every Friday after the Holy Qurbana for children
from Pre-KG to Class 7.
Holy Qurbana in English Language is conducted on the second
Friday of every month at NECK from 8:00 am for the benefit
of the Sunday School Students. Attendance is compulsory and
students are trained on all aspects of the Holy Qurbana.
Classes start with three separate general assembly where Infants
(Pre-KG, LKG and UKG) have action songs, stories and
birthday celebration which are managed by teachers, Junior
students (Class 1 to 5) have song practices, action songs,
quizzes, religious cartoon movies and birthday celebrations
while the Senior students are divided into houses where
various activities such as quizzes, debates, skits, MGOCSM
activities etc. are conducted. The MGOCSM with around 500
members is very active and meet every Saturday with the
Vicar or Asst. Vicar for discussions and meditation. Yearly
the Sunday School elects a Head boy, Head Girl, MGOCSM
General Secretary, two Joint Secretaries, Treasurer, House
Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects who form the student
council. The Student Council elects an Editorial Board who
publishes the Kaleidoscope – a magazine for the students by
students. Class photographs, drawings, first prize winning
essays, elocution and extempore speeches, poems, stories
etc. are published in Kaleidoscope.
The Sunday School conducts an Annual Talents Scan which include
Single Songs (English & Malayalam), Groups Songs, Story
Telling, Coloring, Drawing, Memory test, Verses oral, Verses
Writing, Essay, Elocution, Extempore speech, Verses Quick
Find and General Knowledge in addition to Annual Examination
based on OKR text books. Points are given for winners in
each of the items and prizes are awarded based on the total
points obtained by each of the students. The highest points
in each of the Groups (KG, Infants, Sub-Juniors, Juniors,
Intermediate and Seniors) get Ever Rolling Trophy sponsored
in memory of Late Very Rev. Zachariah Cor-Episcopa Karuvelil.
The highest point in the Sunday School receives the
Headmaster's Trophy and the Runner-up gets trophy sponsored
by Late Very Rev. Elias Thomas Cor-Episcopa Educational
society.
The Sunday School arranges two parent/teachers meeting every year
where the activities of the Sunday School are discussed and
opinions and suggestions of Parents are taken and
implemented. A Parents Committee of 15 members is elected
from the Parents association who helps the teachers with the
day to day activities during the Sunday School timing.
Parents Committee meets quarterly or as required and
provides advices on various matters that are relevant to the
smooth functioning of the Sunday School. They also
undertake the Annual Sunday School picnic.
The Sunday School have two choir teams – the Malayalam team headed
by Mr. M. U. Mathews, supporting Holy Qurbana on every
Tuesday and the English Team headed by Mr. Biju Jacob
Varghese supporting Holy Qurbana in English on every 2nd
Friday of the month. Two members of the Parents Committee
co-ordinate the activities of the Choir.
The Teachers Council under the guidance of the Headmaster manages
the day-to-day affairs of the Sunday School. The roles and
responsibilities of the Teachers Council are as follows:

Responsible
for the overall co-ordination of the activities between the
Teachers In-Charge, the church and other spiritual
organizations. Responsible to the church on grant provided
by the church and coordinates expenses with the Treasurer.
Reviews and finalizes the Sunday School budget and accounts
together with Treasurer. Makes general announcements in
co-ordination with various teachers in-charge and MGOCSM
Vice Presidents. Appointment of new teachers in
consultation and with the approval of the Vicar and
allocation of Teachers to Classes. The Senior Teacher
In-Charge functions as a back up to the Headmaster.
2. Mr. Samkutty George, Teacher In-Charge Senior School +
Talent Scan
Responsible
for the management of Senior classes, plans assembly
programs and co-ordinates the same with Head Boy and Head
Girl. Manages the senior assembly and houses through the HB
& HG. Ensures students and teachers have all the materials
required for study/teaching. Ascertaining stock levels of
Books and providing requirement for next year. Visit all
senior classes regularly and interact with teachers and
students. Responsible for planning and organizing Talent
Scan in co-ordination with Parents Committee; confirm dates
and ensure early booking of venue and availability of Judges
for Talent Scan.
3. Mr. Samuel Chacko, Teacher In-Charge Junior School +
OVBS
Responsible
for the management of Junior classes, plans assembly
programs and co-ordinates the same with Head Boy and Head
Girl. Manages the junior assembly and houses through the HB
& HG. Ensures students and teachers have all the materials
required for study/teaching. Ascertaining stock levels of
Books and providing requirement for next year. Visit all
Junior classes regularly and interact with teachers and
students. Responsible for planning and organizing OVBS
during summer holidays in co-ordination with Church Managing
Committee and Parents Committee. Confirm dates and ensure
early booking of venue for conducting OVBS. Organizes
junior picnic in coordination with Parents Committee. Also
coordinates the activities of Abbassiya Sunday School with
City and vice versa.
4. Mr.
Ebey Samuel, Teacher In-Charge (Unit Secretary) & Mrs. Usha
Mariam JOHN Teacher In-Charge (Unit Jt. Secretary)
Manages the
student registration system, badges, birth day lists,
promotions, and enters competition and other details in the
computer system. Ascertains the stock level of books at the
end of the year and places order for new books. Arranges
printing of syllabus and verses books. Arranges photocopies
of materials, badges etc. Responsible for registration of
SSFC students with OKR. Plan and circulate Calendar of
Events. Responsible for booking venue/class for special
events, arranging teachers meetings and parent’s committee
meetings as required. Provides Sunday School announcements
to Church Secretary and web master in consultation with the
Headmaster.
5. Mr. Philips John, Teacher In-Charge (Accounts)
Responsible
for the management of Sunday School accounts, prepares the
budget and annual accounts, keeps receipt and payment
vouchers and accounting records up to date at all times and
presents them to Headmaster for review before submitting for
Church Audit. Receives offertory from prefects and
accounts them in the books. Spend money against payment
vouchers/receipts as required by office bearers with the
approval of the Headmaster. Responsible for control of Food
Coupons and provision for Refreshments during Functions and
also arrangement of transport as and when required.
6. Mrs. Gincy Varghese, Mr. Biju Jacob Varghese, Mrs.
Elizabeth Ipe, Mrs. Anita Biju, Mrs. Sharon Iype, Mrs. Jessy
Jaison, Miss. Geena George (Assembly – City) and Mr. Ajish M
Thomas (Assembly - Abbassiya)
Teaches
songs – English and Malayalam – during the assembly. Trains
and coordinates the Sunday School students for OVBS and
other internal and external functions.
7. Mr. Jacob Koshy (Teacher-in-Charge, Abbassiya Sunday School)
Manages the
affairs of the Sunday School in Abbassiya which has classes
from Pre-KG to 7.
