Soonoyo Nombu

15 days lent starts on Monday  1st August and ends on Monday 15th August. Soonoyo lent is observed in the name of the mother of God and in remembrance of her Assumption. The Assumption of Mary was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end her earthly life. Let us submit ourselves to the Lord in the valuable intercession of St. Mary.

Feast of assumption (Soonoyo)  will be celebrated at our parish on Sunday 14th August 2011 at  St. George Chapel, Abbassiya from 6:30 pm.

Dear All

As we had seen the blessed effect the motivation-drive had on our members' lives during the Sleeha-Nombu, the Orthodox Christian Youth Movement would like to remind that it is time for yet another lent. Our Church forefathers had set August 1-15 as the period of Shoonoyo lent (Feast of Assumption). The feast commemorates the Holy Period in which the Church urges us to contemplate on, and intercede with St. Mary who is believed to be taken to heavenly abode on August 15. It is this day in history in which St. Mary's Dormition (falling sleep) and Assumption (journey to Heaven) took place one after the other. It is a clear pointer that meek submission of Mother Mary before God Almighty had only taken her to the heavenly abode though she never expected this privilege which most of us didn't yet think of. During this age where we rarely see mutual respect and dedication before God Almighty, St. Mary's meek surrender before Lord the Father should be a leading example in our lives. OCYM members and families did observe the Sleeha-Noimbu with added enthusiasm and fervor also giving special importance to regular family prayer. Here is another occasion of a lent by which we can approach and feel the vicinity of God Almighty once again. We request all members of the SGIO Maha Edavaka to submit before His will to sanctify ourselves, and shed off the darkness that looms over the society from savoring the divine touch and blessings of Lord Jesus Christ. The Assumption or Shoonoyo Lent instituted for interceding to Saint Mary, also points to the witness, endurance and dedication of Mother Mary and in a way the mental persecution during her mission to be the bearer of God (Theotokos). This Lent also guides us to fight war against worldly desires and keep us all spiritually alert the soul to win over Satan.
